Our story
Our Mission
Beech Tree Technology Advisors was founded to help small businesses make informed, confident technology decisions. Many organizations struggling to navigate an increasingly complex technology landscape—often receiving conflicting advice, lacking strategic guidance, or feeling locked into relationships that no longer served their needs. Our role is simple: advocate for the client. We take the time to understand your business, your goals, and your challenges, then help you identify technology solutions that support long-term success.
Technology is no longer just about computers. Today's businesses rely on cloud services, cybersecurity controls, software vendors, remote access systems, operational technology, and third-party providers to keep operations running. Most business owners are expected to make critical technology decisions without having a trusted advisor at the table. Beech Tree Technology Advisors was founded to fill that gap. We help organizations understand risk, improve cybersecurity, evaluate vendors, prepare for cyber insurance requirements, and build resilient technology environments that support long-term business success.
The beech tree is a fitting symbol for our approach. Known for its strong roots and enduring strength, the beech tree represents stability, growth, and resilience. Technology should provide the same foundation for your business—supporting growth today while preparing you for tomorrow's challenges.
Hi, I'm Sterling Unan, founder of Beech Tree Technology Advisors.
Over 40 years in technology, I have worked as a mainframe programmer in manufacturing, writing programs for barcode systems, as well as a network and systems engineer supporting Novell and Microsoft environments. I have managed the digital technology landscape for a multi-billion-dollar hedge fund and established IT security programs across military, healthcare, finance, and manufacturing environments.
I founded Beech Tree Technology Advisors to provide independent technology guidance to small businesses throughout Connecticut. As a CISSP-certified technology advisor, I help clients make practical technology and cybersecurity decisions that reduce risk and support growth.
My wife and I are both Air Force veterans, and we raised our family in Deep River. Those experiences shaped the values that define our business today: service, trust, accountability, and a commitment to doing what's right for the client.

Industry focus
Manufacturing & Industrial Technology
Manufacturers depend on more than office technology.
Production equipment, industrial controls, remote access systems, software vendors, backups, and cybersecurity controls must all work together to keep operations running.
Beech Tree helps manufacturers identify technology and cybersecurity risks that could impact production, business continuity, insurance requirements, and operational performance.
We work alongside owners, operational leaders, electricians, controls vendors, IT providers, and insurance partners to help create practical, risk-based technology strategies.
Beyond traditional IT
Many organizations already have an IT provider.
Our role is different.
We frequently work alongside existing IT providers.
We help clients:
- Understand technology risk
- Evaluate and select vendors objectively
- Strengthen cybersecurity posture
- Prepare for cybersecurity insurance requirements
- Improve Microsoft 365 configuration and security
- Develop practical technology and continuity plans
- Navigate technology decisions with confidence
What we stand for
The values behind every contact
Honesty above all
We tell you what you actually need — not what generates the most revenue. If something isn't necessary, we'll say so.
Independence you can trust
We don't sell hardware, software, or managed services on commission. Our recommendations are based solely on what's right for your business.
Practical over perfect
We focus on realistic, achievable improvements — not theoretical best practices that don't fit a small business budget or team.
Long-term relationships
We're not here for a one-time project. We want to be the technology advisor you call first — year after year.
How we work
Our approach
We start with a conversation
Every engagement begins with a free consultation — no pressure, no sales pitch. We want to understand your business, your current technology, and where the pain points are.
We assess what you have
We take a careful look at your current setup — devices, software, security posture, and Microsoft 365 configuration — and give you an honest picture of where things stand.
We build a plan together
Based on what we find, we recommend a practical path forward — prioritized by impact and budget. No unnecessary upgrades, no vendor lock-in.
We stay by your side
Whether you need ongoing advisory support or guidance on a specific initiative, Beech Tree is here for the long haul.
